Growing up, my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Rosson, gave me an assignment to design a hallway bulletin board, and part of that was to lead the class in an activity. That’s the day I decided to become a teacher because designing bulletin boards seemed to me to be the best job ever. Little did I know then that minimal time is spent designing bulletin boards as a teacher.

What is STEM? Yes, it’s a group of letters that could stand for science, technology, engineering, and math. Or, if you are a part of the STEM East Network, STEM stands for Strategies That Engage Minds. No matter your definition of STEM, we’re all on the same page: STEM skills, and the dispositions that come along with acquiring those skills, will project students into the future. After all, students are the future workforce, and if schools and business join together, the result can be the closure of the skills and interest gap.

Few elementary school teachers are engineers.
Few engineers are elementary school teachers.
And that’s where instructional technology breaks down.
There’s no end to the tech that teachers can integrate in their classrooms, from smart boards to tablets to one-to-one device initiatives to robots and beyond.
As a result, some classrooms are flipping, letting students watch video lectures at home and do the actual exercises in the classroom where teachers and classmates can help. Textbooks come alive on tablets through video and interactive graphics. Students familiarize themselves with applications and devices they’ll use throughout their education and in the workplace.

The temperatures might be quickly cooling off in this corner of Kansas, but my thoughts are still on a recent warmer, sunnier time. In late June, I traveled with Mohit Abraham, our International Sales Manager, to the Dominican Republic to meet with STEM UM, an education dealer, to learn more about how they serve teachers and define success.
